The ask: when and how (the WhatsApp script)
In this lesson · Ask for reviews at the right moment with a WhatsApp script that works.
Why this matters
This lesson is the engine of the whole course. Get this one habit running and reviews accumulate on their own. Skip it and everything else is theory.
The firms with 80 reviews do one thing differently: at the moment the client is happiest, they ask — and they make it one tap easy. That's it. The moment, the words, and the link.
The steps
- 1
1. Identify the moment
Every legal matter has a peak-satisfaction point: the transfer registers, the estate is finalised, the settlement lands, the charges are withdrawn, the decree comes through. You know this moment in every matter — it's when the client says "thank you, I can't tell you what a relief this is." THAT is the moment. Not in the final invoice email. Not three weeks later. Within 24 hours of the relief.

2. Ask on WhatsApp, not email
South Africa runs on WhatsApp — your client lives there, replies there, and can tap a link there in one motion. Email asks get read later, feel formal, and die in the inbox. A WhatsApp ask lands in the conversation you already have with the client, while the goodwill is warm.
- 3
3. Use the exact script
Don't improvise. This one works because it's personal, optional, and one tap:
"Hi [Name] — so glad we could get this over the line for you. If you have 30 seconds, a Google review would mean a lot to our small firm — it helps other people in [town] find us when they need help: [your review link]. Either way, it's been a pleasure looking after this for you."
Three parts: genuine pleasure, an honest reason ("helps others find us" — never "helps our ranking"), zero pressure. Never offer anything in return. Never tell them what to write.
- 4
4. Attach the link properly
The review link (Lesson 3 shows you how to create it) must open the review box directly — not your profile's front page. Every extra tap halves your conversion. Test it yourself: send it to your own phone, tap it, count the taps to the stars. It should be one.
- 5
5. Build it into the file-closing checklist
The ask fails when it depends on remembering. Add one line to whatever checklist your firm uses to close a file: "Review ask sent — [date]". Matter concluded → relief moment → script sent → line ticked. System, not memory.
- 6
6. Whoever closes, asks
The attorney or paralegal who handled the matter sends it from the relationship, not from "the office". Clients give reviews to people.
- 7
7. Expect one in four
Some clients ignore it, some mean to and forget, some do it instantly. One in four completed matters converting to a review is a healthy, sustainable rate — and at SA firm volumes that's 20–40 reviews a year, which in most towns makes you the most-reviewed firm within 18 months.
The WhatsApp ask script — copy, save it in WhatsApp's quick replies (Settings → Business tools → Quick replies, shortcut "/review"), and it's a 10-second action forever
Follow-up (only if they replied positively but didn't post — send once, 5–7 days later):
What this moves
Review count — the compounding lever — and it starts this week. The next lesson takes 10 minutes and removes the last friction: your direct review link, created once, working forever.
